It’s that time of year!!! Are you embarking on your chicken-keeping journey? Here are five essential tips to that I have found make all the difference!
1️⃣ Spacious Coop & Run: Make sure your coop is roomy enough for all your chickens to live comfortably. Cramped spaces can lead to stressed and unhealthy birds.
2️⃣ Sand & Cat Scoop Method: Use sand as bedding for easy cleaning and odor control. A cat scoop works wonders for daily maintenance!
3️⃣ Adequate Food & Water Dispensers: Invest in a large enough food dispenser to ensure your chickens always have access to fresh food and don’t go hungry.
4️⃣ Research Your Breeds; Different breeds have different needs. Some are more suitable for colder climates, others lay more eggs. Choose the right breed for your environment and needs.
5️⃣ Hardware Wire Over Chicken Wire: For your coop’s fencing, opt for hardware wire. It’s much sturdier and more predator-proof than chicken wire, keeping your chickens safe from unwanted visitors. I bury mine 5 or so inches in the ground so that things can’t fog under either.
