Summer brings with it high temperatures and…the dreaded flies 🪰 on our farm. I have tried so many different products some good, some eh, some just plain ole useless. This year we set out to make sure we did everything in our power to get it under control. Fly prevention is crucial for the health and well-being of horses, it is more than just a constant nuisance, those nasty things also transmit diseases. While it is still a battle that requires diligence and smart cleaning around the barn and field, we have found several really effective products that can help keep flies at bay. Here are my five now tried and true products that are highly recommended for fly prevention in equine:
Ultra Shield Fly Spray: This fly spray is specifically designed to repel and kill flies, mosquitoes, and gnats. It contains active ingredients that are effective in providing long-lasting protection against a wide range of flying insects. The spray is easy to apply and can be used on horses, as well as in barns and stables. It offers a convenient and efficient solution for fly control. It smells nice too!
Castle Crusader Fly Mask: The Cashel Crusader Fly Mask is a popular choice for horse owners looking to protect their equine companions from flies. This mask is designed to fit comfortably over the horse’s head, covering the eyes, ears, and nose. It provides a physical barrier that prevents flies from landing on sensitive areas, reducing irritation and the risk of fly-borne infections. The mask is made from durable and breathable materials, ensuring both comfort and protection with (for summer to avoid sunburn) or without the nose cover, It is the ONLY mask that I buy now. SHOOFLY Horse Leggings: These patented loose-fitting fly boots are an excellent option for safeguarding a horse’s lower legs from flies. Made from breathable plastic mesh, they provide ventilation while keeping flies away from the horse’s legs. The leggings are easy to put on and take off, and their loose-fitting design allows for natural movement. They are an effective and comfortable solution for minimizing fly irritation on the horse’s lower limbs.
Formula 707 MultiFly Feed-Thru Fly Control Pellets: These palatable pellets are designed to be added to a horse’s daily feed. They contain natural ingredients that are known to inhibit the development of fly larvae in manure, thereby reducing the overall fly population. The pellets are safe for horses to consume and can provide long-term fly control by breaking the fly life cycle at its source. They are a convenient and effective method of fly prevention. I started added this to feed in March to get a head start on the fly season.
Farnam SWAT CLEAR Horse Fly Control: Farnam SWAT CLEAR is a great choice for targeted fly control. I use this ointment on their noses where the mask does not cover. It is also really useful applied directly to areas where flies are prone to bite, such as wounds, sores, or around the horse’s eyes and ears. It creates a protective barrier that repels and kills flies on contact, providing relief and preventing further irritation. The ointment is clear and non-staining, making it suitable for use in various situations. It’s a little bit messy on my hand, but welllll worth the effort.
In addition to these individual products, horse owners may also consider implementing a comprehensive fly control program such as Arbico Fly Eliminators. These programs involve the release of beneficial insects that prey on flies, effectively reducing the fly population in the environment. Arbico Fly Eliminators are an eco-friendly and natural solution for long-term fly prevention and management. You can choose the program that works best for you. We get a monthly delivery and just scatter the little buggers around the barn or where manure exists.
When it comes to fly prevention on our farm, we have found that using a combination of these products has made a measurable difference. Are there still flies around? Well, sure! But it is 110% improved over last year’s efforts. Our goal is always to create a more comfortable and healthier environment for all of our furry and feathered family.
