DIY Vanilla Extract: Time to Start Now!

Four swing top bottles of homemade vanilla extract lined up on a windowsill

Hey friends! Jules here from Sweet Bombdiggity Farms. It’s that time of year to get our homemade vanilla extracts going! They need to sit for about 6 months, so they’ll be ready just in time for holiday baking. Here’s why you should try making both bourbon and vodka vanilla extracts:

Bourbon Vanilla Extract

– Rich Flavor: Adds a deep, warm flavor perfect for cookies, cakes, and desserts.

– Versatile: Ideal for recipes that benefit from a hint of smokiness and complexity.

Vodka Vanilla Extract:

– Pure Taste: Provides a clean, classic vanilla flavor that works in any recipe.

– Neutral Base: Perfect for dishes where you want the vanilla to shine without additional flavors.

Ingredients:

– Fresh vanilla beans

– Good-quality bourbon

– Good-quality vodka

– Glass bottles with tight lids

Instructions:

1. Split the vanilla beans lengthwise.

2. Place them in the bottles (2-3 beans per bottle).

3. Fill one bottle with bourbon and the other with vodka.

4. Seal and store in a cool, dark place for at least 6 months. Shake occasionally.

Get started now, and you’ll have the most amazing vanilla extracts ready for all your holiday baking! 🌾✨
