Learning never stops, especially when it comes to taking care of our animals. Thanks to insights from our trusted farrier, Jeff, I’ve gathered some essential hoof care tips thqt are worth a good reminder.
1️⃣ Regular Trimming: Just like us, our horses, goats, and donkeys benefit greatly from routine maintenance. Horses and donkeys do best when their hooves are balanced and goats hooves can be so painful for them if their nail curls under so this is also critical for them! We make sure to schedule hoof trims every 6-8 weeks to keep everyone walking comfortably.
2️⃣ Daily Cleaning: We take a few minutes each day to clear out mud, stones, and debris from the hooves. This simple step is crucial for preventing infections and ensuring overall hoof health.
3️⃣ Moisture Balance: Jeff has taught us the importance of keeping hooves not too dry and not too wet. He uses a homemade mixture with pine tar, Scarlett oil and other magical things, but there are excellent commercial options available that can also do the trick. He also uses an iodine spray to harden up the hoof during these rainy season. Think about how soft your own nails get when you soak them in water!
4️⃣ Regular Inspections: We always keep an eye out for any signs of damage or disease. Early detection means easier management and less discomfort for our animals.
5️⃣ Nutritional Support: Our animals receive Farrier’s Formula in their diet, which helps strengthen their hooves from the inside out, thanks to essential nutrients like biotin, zinc, and copper.
🫏🐴🐐 Taking the time to care for hooves properly is a vital part of our routine and responsibility here. Jeff did 9 animals total today – 4 goats, 4 donks and our horse Rosie. Whew! That is a workout! Thanks Jeff—we sooooo appreciate you! 💕
