People ask us all the time—what are those things that your horses wear on their heads? No, they’re not just fashionable statements—though I admit, I do go for the cute ones! They’re actually fly masks, and they serve some very practical purposes for our pampered equines.
Here are three reasons why our spoiled girls wear them:
1️⃣ Protection from Pests: Fly masks shield our horses’ eyes, ears, and sometimes even their noses from irritating insects. This is crucial not only for comfort but also to prevent any insect-borne diseases.
2️⃣ Shield from Debris and Sun: Besides bugs, fly masks help block dust, dirt, and harmful UV rays that can damage sensitive eyes and lead to health issues like sunburn or eye infections. Our girls both burn on the white and pink of their noses so we even use the long-nosed ones but there are all different styles to try.
Amelia is a white horse and is especially important to protect the pink skin around her eyes from harmful UV rays to prevent cancer.
3️⃣ Comfort and Peace: Wearing these masks helps our horses enjoy their daytime frolicking without the constant annoyance of swatting flies. This means more relaxation and less stress for them.
So next time you see a horse decked out in one of these handy accessories, know that it’s much more than a cute outfit—for us, it’s just another way we show our love and care for our deserving rescue babies.
