Thriving Hydrangeas and Their Color Change Magic

Have you noticed all the hydrangeas blooming around Tennessee right now? They are absolutely stunning! Here are some easy tips and fun facts about hydrangeas that I thought you’d enjoy:

Hydrangeas can change color based on the soil’s pH level. It’s like a little science experiment in your garden! You should amend your soil in late fall or early spring if you want to switch things up!

Pink Flowers 💗

  – Aim for a soil pH of 6.0 to 6.2.

  – Use garden lime or dolomitic lime.

  – Keep high nitrogen and low phosphorus levels.

-Natural Tip: Add compost to your soil. It helps maintain a more alkaline pH over time.

Blue Flowers 💙

  – Aim for a soil pH of 5.2 to 5.5.

  – Use aluminum sulfate, elemental sulfur, or iron sulfate.

  – Keep low phosphorus, moderate nitrogen, and high potassium levels.

—Use pine needles as mulch. They slowly acidify the soil, helping to maintain the necessary pH.

Mixed or Purple Flowers 💜

  – These happen in neutral soils with a pH of 6.5 to 7.5.

—Natural Tip: Regularly use a mix of compost and pine needles to balance the soil’s pH.

So, save this post as a reference and start experimenting with your hydrangeas later this fall! By adjusting the soil’s pH with simple, natural methods like using compost or pine needles or amending the soil with lime or a sulfate you can enjoy a beautiful variety of colors in your garden. So start planning to play around with your soil, and watch your hydrangeas transform!
