#FarmSunday Devotional: Sufficient for Today

On this #FarmSunday, let’s take a moment to reflect on the simplicity and profound wisdom of trust. This week a favorite comforting and song on my playlist, “Sufficient for Today” by Maverick City Music, led us into the book of Matthew. These verses remind us of God’s unwavering care and the peace that comes from relying on Him.

Matthew 6:30-34 (The Message) says:

“If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.”

What a wonderful and gentle reminder to us all! If God lavishes such care on wildflowers, how much more will He care for us, His beloved creation? Often, we are so caught up in our daily worries and future anxieties that we forget to rest in God’s provision and timing.

God is calling us to trust Him with our present needs and future concerns. To relax and not be consumed by the “what ifs” of life. He assures us that just as He adorns the wildflowers, He will also tend to us, providing exactly what we need at the right time. Our only responsibility is to steep ourselves in His reality, to focus on His initiative, and to rest in His abundant provision. As humans, this is hard sometimes — to just TRUST and steep ourselves in Him rather than relying on our own tendency to “fix” and thinking that we can provide what we need.

So today, let’s make a conscious effort to release our anxieties and trust in God’s care. Let’s focus on what He is doing in our lives right now, responding to His giving with gratitude and trust. Remember, God is with us, attending to every detail, and He will help us face whatever comes our way.

As the song so beautifully reminds us —“what I’ve learned about your favor, your mercy and your grace—is that they go on forever—and that’s sufficient for today.” We pray that you find peace and rest in His sufficiency today and always.
