When to Harvest Zinnias: A Guide for Longer-Lasting Blooms

Learning when to harvest your zinnias can make all the difference in how long your beautiful blooms last in a bouquet. Here’s a helpful tip I learned from Floret Flower Farm, and my teacher’s heart can’t resist sharing this good information with you!

The Wiggle Test: When checking if your zinnias are ready to be harvested, gently wiggle the stem just below the flower. If the stem is wiggly, it means the flower isn’t quite ready yet. Allow it to stay on the plant a little longer. You’ll know it’s time to harvest when the stem feels firm and steady—this is your cue that the flower is mature and ready for cutting.

Timing Matters: Harvesting at the right time not only ensures your zinnias are at their peak beauty but also helps them last longer indoors. Freshly cut zinnias with firm stems can grace your vases for up to a week or more, allowing you to fully enjoy the vibrant colors and cheerful presence of these garden gems.

Bonus Tip: Cut your zinnias early in the morning when the flowers are most hydrated. Use a sharp, clean pair of shears to make a clean cut, ideally just above a leaf node. This encourages the plant to produce more blooms, so you can continue enjoying your zinnias throughout the growing season.

Happy gardening! Share this post and spread the joy of growing and harvesting zinnias 🌸
