The Hardy Begonia: You Need This Effortless Plant in your Garden 

I absolutely adore hardy begonias, specifically Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana. They line the front of our cabin, bursting with dainty pink blooms by summer. In early spring, it’s a joy to see them reseed themselves. These shade-loving beauties (will tolerate some sun too) are hardy in zones 6-9, resilient, and low-maintenance. I literally ignore them! They naturally spread but are easy to manage.

Hardy begonias are perfect for zones 6-9. They’re resilient, low-maintenance, and easy to manage. They’re also great for sharing with other gardeners because they grow bulbils (pronounced “BUHL-bilz”) or baby bulbs at the leaf axil where the leaf meets the stem. This happens in the late fall making propagation a breeze.
