If you’re planting California Early Softneck Garlic like I am, here’s what you need to know:
🧄 Softneck Garlic: Milder, perfect for everyday cooking, stores longer, and is ideal for braiding thanks to its flexible stalks.
🧄 Hardneck Garlic: Bolder, spicier flavor with an edible garlic scape, but doesn’t store as long.
How to Plant Softneck Garlic:
1️⃣ Separate the Bulbs: Break apart the bulbs into individual cloves, keeping the papery skin intact.
2️⃣ Pick a Sunny Spot: Garlic loves full sun.
3️⃣ Soil Requirements: Garlic thrives in well-drained, loose, and fertile soil. Adding compost or organic matter will give it a great start!
4️⃣ Plant Each Clove: Place cloves 2 inches deep, 4-6 inches apart, flat side down.
5️⃣ Mulch and Water: Cover with mulch for winter protection and water well.
When to Harvest: Plant now, and your garlic will be ready to harvest by early summer (June or July), when the lower leaves start to yellow.
Braiding your softneck garlic is a great way to store it and enjoy its mild flavor all year long! 🌱
