Dizzy Days and Determination: No sick days on the Farm

Today has already been one of those days on the farm when everything feels like a whirlwind, and not necessarily in a good way. You see, farm chores don’t hit the snooze button just because you wake up feeling like you’ve been on a rollercoaster.

#FarmingAfter50 isnt for wimps. To start with age brings with it normal aches and pains in joints as well as other physical irritations (helllooooo menopause!) but we expect those things as we enter this journey. We just adjust and press on because they have become a part of our daily lives. But what happens when you get the flu or a stomach bug? Easy answer—the same dang things!

Navigating farm life after hitting the big 5-0 is like embarking on an epic adventure. It’s a reminder that we might not bounce back as quickly as we did in our younger years, but every ache and creak serves as a badge of honor—a testament to the countless hours we’ve spent building this farm.

I woke up feeling as if I was doing the chicken dance in slow motion—dizzy and nauseous. Lane headed off to work, and I thought maybe it would just pass. But guess what? It didn’t. And guess what? Our sizable crew of animal friends did not get the memo that mom wasn’t 100%. They still expected their routines and royal treatment.

Despite the vertigo, I’m doing my best. Step by tiny step, I’m powering through, taking care of our animals, making sure to stay hydrated with plenty of water and stopping to rest. I guess you could say it’s like a farm dance, but without the fancy moves.

Sometimes, being on the farm feels a bit like having a perpetual toddler in your care. You can’t just call in sick and take the day off; they rely on you all day, every day. But you know what? It’s all part of the magic of farm life.

Sure, there are moments when I wish for a pause button, a chance to catch my breath and rest. But there’s an inexplicable joy and fulfillment in knowing that we’re providing for these amazing creatures and being a part of something bigger than ourselves.

So, cheers to my fellow farm caretakers out there, whether you’re feeling top-notch or like you’ve been on a carousel, keep on going. The farm may not understand sick days, but the connection we share with the land and animals makes it all worth it.

Let’s embrace the messy, the dizziness, and the chaos with a smile, because at the end of the day, it’s a dance we’re lucky to be a part of.
