You can put a seed in good soil and walk away, and nothing much happens. The seed was real. The soil was real. What was missing was everything that comes after.
The Pattern I Know
I have done that with seeds, and I have done it with myself. I start something, I mean it when I start it, and then the meaning wears off and the tending stops.
The problem is never the beginning. Beginnings are easy, and they feel good. We’re good at beginnings.
The hard part? What comes after. The tending. The building. The staying power.
And that’s exactly what Peter is talking about this week in 2 Peter 1:5-9.
Building on the Foundation
Last week in The Best Invitation, we learned we have been blessed with the best invitation, the best promises, and the best ticket ever, a life that pleases God through Jesus Christ.
This week, Peter challenges us on what comes next.
In 2 Peter 1:5-9, Peter says:
So don’t lose a minute in building on what you’ve been given, complementing your basic faith with good character, spiritual understanding, alert discipline, passionate patience, reverent wonder, warm friendliness, and generous love, each dimension fitting into and developing the others. With these qualities active and growing in your lives, no grass will grow under your feet, no day will pass without its reward as you mature in your experience of our Master Jesus.
Don’t lose a minute. Peter is urgent here. He’s not saying someday build on what you’ve been given. He’s saying now.
The Seven Qualities
Besides your basic faith as a foundation, Peter tells us to add these seven qualities:
1. Good Character
Living right for God. Making choices that honor Him and reflect His character.
2. Spiritual Understanding
A deeper understanding of God and His truth. Not just head knowledge, but knowing God.
3. Alert Discipline
Being self-controlled and keeping your desires and actions in check. Living with intention.
4. Passionate Patience
Remaining steady through trials, tribulations, and difficulties. Endurance with hope.
5. Reverent Wonder
A life that honors and imitates God. Awe at who He is.
6. Warm Friendliness
Genuine kindness toward others. Not surface-level. Real compassion.
7. Generous Love
Unselfish, sacrificial care and compassion for others. Love that costs something.
What Happens When They’re Growing
Peter says that when these qualities are flourishing and growing in our lives, no grass will grow under your feet. No day passes without its reward as we imitate, grow, develop, and mature in our experience and relationship with Jesus Christ.
But here’s the flip side, and Peter is clear about this. When these qualities are not operating in your life, your growth as a Christian is not happening. Your life has not changed. It is not any different than what it was before Jesus Christ saved and liberated you.
The Question for This Week
Let’s stop and ask ourselves:
How is my life different in Jesus Christ?
What would Jesus say about the words, behaviors, and meditations of your heart?
Are they acceptable to Him?
Do they honor and bring Him joy and pleasure as you serve Him?
That’s not shame talking. That’s an invitation to tend to what matters most.
