Every Day a Learning Day: Farm Life Adventures with Mini Donkeys

Life on the farm is nothing short of an adventure, and every day brings new lessons – some delightful, some tough, but all valuable. Today, I want to share a recent lesson we learned from our two adorable mini donk jacks, who came into our lives as intact adults.

For 18 wonderful months, these little guys were the best of friends, frolicking and playing without a care in the world. I had read plenty about the benefits of neutering jacks, but seeing how well they got along, it didn’t seem necessary. That was until one fateful day when our usually playful pair started brutally biting each other. It was a shocking and sudden change that had us deeply concerned. Their personalities, which had been consistently sweet and gentle, were off-kilter all summer.

After some research and consultation with our veterinarian, we made the decision to have them castrated. Today was the big day for their “procedure,” as we affectionately call it.

Listen to the Experienced Voices

This situation reminded us of a critical lesson: listen to those who have walked the path before you. When experienced donkey owners and veterinarians recommend neutering jacks, it’s for a reason. Even if your boys are the sweetest souls, as ours are, they can become unpredictable and sometimes even aggressive.

The whole process of having our jacks castrated wasn’t something we took lightly. It was a decision made out of love for our boys and the desire to ensure they live happy, healthy, and harmonious lives.

Hopeful for Harmony

Today, after their procedure, we are hopeful. Hopeful that our once inseparable duo will soon be back to their playful, loving selves. Hopeful that this summer of lessons will turn into a lifetime of harmonious companionship for our two geldings.

Our boys were true champions today. They handled the procedure like pros and were as affectionate as ever when we visited them post-operation. We showered them with love, treats, and gentle reassurance that they are still cherished members of our farm family.

Cheers to Our Brave Boys

So, here’s to our mini donk jacks – now geldings – and the newest chapter in their lives. It’s also a toast to continual learning on this beautiful, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding #FarmingAfter50 farm life journey.

Remember, farming is an ongoing adventure with its fair share of trials and triumphs. No matter how seasoned we are, there’s always something new to learn. And in that spirit of learning, we grow not only as farmers but as stewards of the incredible lives that depend on us.

Cheers to our boys, to resilience, and to the love that makes all the lessons worth it.
