John 10:10b — “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.”
If you’ve followed along with us, you’ve heard us talk about designing a flourishing and abundant life. Biblically speaking, flourishing and the abundant life are far more than success as the world defines it. A flourishing and abundant life begins with being deeply rooted in God and His Word — rich in spiritual blessings, bearing the fruit of the Spirit, and finding spiritual joy in even the simplest things, even during times of difficulty. A flourishing and abundant life focuses on spiritual maturity and our daily spiritual walk — becoming more and more like Jesus Christ.
In John 10:10, we hear Jesus say, “I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.” In this passage, Jesus openly shares His purpose and mission. He came so that we could experience a life that flourishes, abounds, overflows, exceeds beyond the limit, and cannot be contained — and most importantly, a life that is eternal and never ends.
Jesus isn’t referring to a life filled with prosperity and “stuff,” which can evaporate as quickly as it appears. Instead, He is describing a life that has the best of all qualities — one that has depth and meaning and is overflowing and bursting with faith, hope, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The real and eternal life Jesus offers is free. And the quality of that life is more and better than anything we could ever dream of.
As we begin this new year, take a moment to pause and celebrate the real, eternal, and abundant life Jesus came to bring. Ask God to shape your heart, guide your steps, and help you live the flourishing life that is “more and better” than you could have ever dream of.
