As we journey through this Christmas season, the word “Advent” becomes particularly significant. It literally means “preparing for the arrival of a notable person.” In the Christian faith, this is the season to prepare our hearts for the celebration of the arrival of our Savior. Today’s FarmSunday devotional draws inspiration from the story of John the Baptist, the miracle son born of Zachariah, a priest, and Elizabeth, his wife. John the Baptist life was a testament to the power of preparation and the fulfillment of God’s promises.
The Role of John the Baptist
John the Baptist’s life was a divine blueprint for preparation—the last prophet of the Old Testament (Luke 16.16). Born to Zachariah and Elizabeth who were very advanced in their old age (probably 60-70 years old), John’s birth itself was a miracle. He was chosen to prepare the way for Jesus Christ, the Messiah. John’s ministry in the wilderness, baptizing and preaching, was a fulfillment of the prophecies in Isaiah and Malachi. He called for repentance and prepared the hearts of the people for the arrival of God.
Preparing Our Hearts and Minds
As we reflect this week on John the Baptist, whose life’s primary role was to prepare us for the arrival of Jesus, let us also take this time to prepare our hearts and minds to encounter God’s only Son—Jesus Christ. Let’s remember, our final preparations this week are not just about external decorations and festivities….in addition, our preparation is about making room in our lives for the presence of God.
As we prepare our hearts this Advent season, let us remember the example of John the Baptist. His life was a testament to the power of preparation, humility, and devotion. May we too prepare the way in our hearts for the arrival of our Savior, embracing His message of love, hope, and salvation. Amen.
