Several years ago, in my 40s, I decided I was going to run a half-marathon. Well… run/walk it. Wog it, really. But the intention was there. I trained, I showed up, and I was determined to finish what I started. Crossing that finish line wasn’t about speed, competition, or even winning—it was about taking a step toward better health and proving to myself that commitment and heart still mattered.
Paul gives us a much bigger picture in 1 Corinthians 9:24–27, using the stadium and its athletes to teach us how to live a spiritually focused, disciplined life. His message centers around three powerful truths about how to Run to Win:
⸻
- Purpose
“Everyone runs; one wins.”
Paul isn’t speaking about earthly competition—he’s calling us to live with intention. Participation alone is not enough. Going through spiritual motions is not enough. Paul urges us to run our spiritual race with purpose and direction. Run to win. Live with intention. Pursue Christ wholeheartedly.
⸻
- Preparation
“All good athletes train hard.”
Champions are not accidental—they are formed through discipline, commitment, and consistent practice and training. Spiritually, our training comes through prayer, scripture, worship, and staying alert to the work of Christ in our lives. These rhythms build spiritual stamina and stability. They strengthen our self-control and deepen our resilience. Our spiritual health depends on this daily preparation.
⸻
- Prize
“They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally.”
Earthly rewards fade. Wealth, recognition, and success eventually pass away. But the prize Paul points to never perishes. Our victory is eternal life with Jesus Christ. That is the race we run. That is the finish line worth giving everything for.
⸻
So this week, let’s take Paul’s words to heart.
Let’s run with purpose, not passively drifting.
Let’s stay committed in our preparation, even on the days it feels hard.
And let’s keep our eyes fixed on the prize that never fades—
the eternal life we have in Jesus Christ.
When we get tired, discouraged, or distracted,
let’s choose to press on and stay faithful,
trusting that Jesus strengthens every step of the race before us.
