How to Plant Leggy Tomato Plants: The Trough Method Simplified

Got some leggy tomato plants? Don’t worry; the trough method is a great solution for giving those tall, spindly plants a new lease on life.

Here’s a quick guide on how to do it:

1️⃣ Prepare Your Trough: Choose a long, shallow container or dig a horizontal trench about 6 inches deep in your garden.

2️⃣ Prepare Your Plant: Remove any of the lower leaves of the plant just leaving the two or three sets of leaves at the top.

3️⃣ Lay the Plant on Its Side: Carefully remove the tomato plant from its pot and lay it sideways in the trough, gently bending the stem upwards so that the top few leaves are above the soil surface.

4️⃣ Cover the Stem: Fill in the trough with soil, covering the entire stem except for the top leaves. The buried stem will sprout roots along its length, giving your plant a stronger foundation. Be careful bending the top of the plant— don’t overdo it!

5️⃣ Water Thoroughly: After planting, water the area well to settle the soil around the new roots.

Why Use the Trough Method❓

🍅 Stronger Root System: By burying the leggy stem, you encourage the growth of additional roots along its length, resulting in a more robust plant.

🍅 Better Stability: A deeper, more extensive root system helps stabilize your tomato plants, making them better equipped to withstand winds and heavy fruit loads.

🍅 Improved Health: The extra roots help the plant absorb more nutrients and water, improving overall health and yield.

This method is simple and effective, especially for those tall plants that need a little extra support. Now that’s BombDiggity!
