Peony Planting Tips for Spring

I just love to see things grow—both plants and people! Today, we’re getting our hands dirty with peonies, planting them right from the root. I love the roots because you can get some exciting colors and varieties that you it don’t usually find at the store: a salmon, a bridal bouquet, and a Shirley Temple are going in the ground for me today! They might not bloom this season, but trust me (just like people), with a little patience, they’ll be absolutely magnificent in the future.

Here’s how I do it:

1️⃣ Choose Your Spot: Find a sunny area where your peonies can bask in at least 6 hours of sunlight each day.

2️⃣ Soil Matters: Work some compost into the soil to make it rich and well-draining. I even add a bit of lime sometimes but that isn’t a requirement.

3️⃣ Planting Time: In spring, dig a cozy hole about 2 inches deep. Position the tuber with the eyes (tiny red buds) facing up, about 1-2 inches below the soil surface. You can also plant them in the fall. They don’t mind the cold!

4️⃣ Give Them Space: Space tubers about 3 feet apart. They like their personal space.

5️⃣ Water Right: After planting, water them well. Keep the soil moist, but not soggy, as peonies aren’t fans of soppy soil.

6️⃣ Patience Pays Off: They may not bloom this year, but give them love and care, and next year, they’ll be the stars of your garden.
