Sausage, Egg & Cheese Bread – A Family Favorite

sausage bread sliced

Sausage bread has always been the heart of our family gatherings. It started when the kids (now all grown up) begged for it at every holiday, and over time, it became a beloved tradition. The smell of that warm, savory bread filling the house is something we all look forward to, whether it’s Christmas morning or a cozy weekend brunch. It’s more than just a dish; it’s a staple of comfort and togetherness that never fails to bring us all back to the table.

Ingredients

1 loaf frozen bread dough (or fresh bread dough if you have it)

1 lb breakfast sausage (mild or spicy, your call)

1 large egg

1 ½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, Colby Jack, or mozzarella — or mix them)

Fresh basil or other herbs (optional but adds brightness)

Salt, pepper, and any favorite seasoning blends

Instructions

Prep the Dough

  • If using frozen dough, place it on a greased baking sheet or in a loaf pan, cover lightly, and let it rise overnight.
  • If using fresh dough, just keep it at room temp until pliable.

Cook the Filling

  •  In a skillet, brown the sausage until fully cooked.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and herbs if you’d like.

Assemble the Bread

  • Roll the dough into a large rectangle on a lightly floured surface.
  • Mix the sausage, cheese and egg together in a bowl
  • Spread the mixture evenly across the bread leaving a 1” border uncovered.
  • Sprinkle with fresh basil or your favorite seasoning.

Roll It Up

  • Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log.
  • Pinch the ends and tuck under, then place seam-side down on a greased baking sheet.

Bake

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • Bake for 45 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and baked through.

Serve

  • Let it cool for 5–10 minutes, then slice into thick rounds.
