The Daily Bread: Inspired by John 6:32-36 and the Art of Bread Making

In the warmth of the kitchen, as the scent of freshly baked bread wafts through the air, we are invited into a sacred moment. Here, in the simple act of baking, we are reminded of a profound truth found in John 6:32-36:

“Jesus said to them, ‘Very truly, I tell you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ They said to him, ‘Sir, give us this bread always.’ Jesus answered, ‘I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’”

In bread making, we are forced to slow down. It’s a process that can’t be rushed; it calls for patience, for waiting, and for tending. As we mix the ingredients and knead the dough, we are not simply preparing a meal; we are participating in a form of soul-care. Like this practice, our spiritual lives need tending, nurturing, and time.

In the act of making homemade bread, we experience a beautiful parallel to our relationship with God. Just as bread sustains and nourishes our bodies, Jesus, the Bread of Life, sustains and nourishes our souls. He grounds us, centers us, and satisfies our deepest hungers and thirsts in a way that nothing else can.

When Ellie Holcomb sings of God being the daily bread we need, it really stuck with me—touched my heart differently than the many times I have read this passage. She captures this intimate, grounding relationship we can have with Him. Life pulls us in a million directions, and the noise can be deafening. Yet, Jesus is the soft, steady invitation to stop, breathe, and be filled. I hope this touches you too today.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for being our daily bread, our true sustenance. Help us to slow down, to savor Your presence, and to be nourished by Your boundless love. In Your name, we pray. Amen.
