🌱🥗 Spring has sprung and with it comes the joy of harvesting the first fresh veggies of the season! Right outside my door, I’ve got a tub of lettuce, crisp and ready to jump into my next salad. There’s something magical about picking your own greens—especially when they’re as convenient as stepping outside!
Here are a few tips to keep your lettuce thriving, even as the days get warmer:
1️⃣ Partial Shade Works Wonders – Lettuce loves cooler temperatures, so as the season heats up, provide some shade to keep it cool. A cloth or a strategically placed umbrella can protect your greens from harsh sun.
2️⃣ Water Well, But Not Too Much – Consistent moisture is key, especially for container-grown lettuce. Water in the mornings so the leaves have time to dry before nightfall, reducing the risk of mildew and other diseases.
3️⃣ Harvest Regularly – Picking leaves regularly encourages new growth and can extend the life of your lettuce. Instead of harvesting the whole head, just take what you need. This “cut and come again” method keeps the plant productive.
4️⃣ Mulch for Moisture and Coolness – Adding a layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture and keeps the roots cool as temperatures rise. Organic mulches like straw or shredded bark are great options.
Enjoy the simple pleasure of grabbing a handful of fresh lettuce for your salads right from your garden. Here’s to a bountiful and tasty season ahead! 🌿🥗
