Farm Sunday: Preparing for God’s Arrival

This time of year is full of preparation.

We trim the tree and fluff the branches. We pull out ornaments that hold memories and meaning. We wrap gifts, plan meals, clean the house, and try to make everything feel just right for the people we love. These simple, intentional acts help us mark the season and make space for celebration.

But Scripture reminds us that the most important preparation of all isn’t something we hang, bake, or wrap. It’s something we do within our hearts.

In Luke chapter 1, we’re given a glimpse behind the scenes of the Christmas story—before the manger, before the angels in the fields, before Bethlehem. In verses 5–25, we learn about another miraculous birth that would prepare the way for Jesus Christ: the birth of John the Baptist.

John’s parents were Zechariah and Elizabeth. Zechariah was a priest, and Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. Scripture tells us they were godly people—faithful, obedient, and sincere in their walk with the Lord. And yet, they carried a long-standing ache: they were childless and well advanced in age.

While Zechariah was serving in the temple, an angel—Gabriel—appeared to him with astonishing news. Their prayers had been heard. Elizabeth would bear a son. His name would be John.

But Gabriel didn’t stop there. He went on to describe John’s calling and purpose—one that was far bigger than the joy of a long-awaited child.

Two things stand out about John’s life.

First, John would be great in the eyes of the Lord. From birth, he would be filled with the Holy Spirit. His life would be marked by spiritual depth and divine purpose. John would call people to repentance, renewal, reconciliation, and restoration—to turn their hearts back toward God.

Second—and this is crucial—John would get the people ready for God.

John’s role was to call people to attention and watchfulness. To wake them up spiritually. To help prepare their hearts to receive the greatest gift the world would ever know: Jesus Christ.

John didn’t come to draw attention to himself. He came to point forward—to clear the path, soften hearts, and make space for the Savior.

That same invitation stands before us today.

As we prepare for the excitement and beauty of the Christmas season, let’s be mindful not to stop at surface-level preparations alone. Let’s also prepare our hearts and minds. Let’s make room for the hope, peace, joy, and love found in Jesus Christ—the true centerpiece and cornerstone of Christmas.

The decorations will come down. The meals will be finished. The gifts will be opened.

But a heart prepared for Christ? That’s a gift that lasts for eternity.

Now that’s BombDiggity.
