You can attract more flies with honey than with vinegar. My grandma used to say that all the time. What a great saying! It’s true for how we talk to people too. The way we come across to others says a lot about our relationship with Jesus Christ, and it matters so much more than we often realize.
In Colossians 4:6, the Apostle Paul provides us wonderful counsel about our everyday conversations with others.
First, Paul says… Be gracious in your speech. “Being gracious” means to be kind, tender, positive, and let your words be filled with joy, goodness, and love.
Second, Paul explains “why”… Paul says, the aim or goal of our communication is to bring out the best in others. Bringing out the best in others means that we add value, bring healing, offer encouragement, and lift others up when we speak. Our words carry meaning and impacts others. Our words can be a positive influence on those who hear us.
Finally, Paul reminds us that our words should be filled with truth and with respect. In a world that seems quick to attack, belittle, and tear others down, as followers of Jesus Christ, our words and messages should never be profane, harsh, criticizing, or cutting. Instead, our communication style and words should elevate, build others up, and be genuinely attractive to the people around us…especially the ones still figuring out where they stand with God.
This week, let’s think about our communication habits and style. Are our words and messages a true and genuine reflection of who we are in Christ? And most importantly, are the words, the tone, and style acceptable and pleasing to the Lord?
