#FarmSunday Devotional: The Power of a Little

In John 6:1-15, we witness an extraordinary moment where Jesus stretches the faith of His followers. Thousands of people are following Him, unprepared and without sufficient food or water. Their need is enormous. Jesus presents a challenge that seems impossible: “Where can we buy bread to feed these people?”

A young boy is brought forward with what little he has—five barley loaves and two fish. It’s hardly enough for himself, let alone thousands. Yet, he offers it to Jesus. Can you imagine the conversation between Andrew and this boy? Andrew says, “Jesus needs the little that you have. He has asked for it.” And the boy, with simple faith, gives it.

Jesus takes this small offering and performs a miracle. He breaks and blesses the loaves and fish, and in those acts of blessing and breaking, He multiplies the boys provision to feed the multitudes. The story reminds us that Jesus not only met the immediate need but provided abundantly—beyond what we ask or think, with twelve baskets of leftovers. He far exceeded what was immediately required, ensuring the blessing extended beyond the present moment.

This miracle teaches us profound lessons about faith and provision. Sometimes, God calls us to do something, and we feel inadequate. Our resources, talents, or time seem too small. But like the boy, we are invited to bring what we have to Jesus. He can take our humble offerings, bless them, break them, and multiply them beyond our imagination.

This week, consider what you have to offer, no matter how small it seems. Trust God to use it in ways you cannot foresee. Let Christ stretch your faith and believe that God can multiply your efforts to meet not just your needs, but the needs of those around you.

Jesus took the bread and, having given thanks, gave it to those who were seated. He did the same with the fish. All ate as much as they wanted” (John 6:11, The Message). Let’s bring our “little” to God and watch Him turn it into an abundance.
