It often catches people off guard when they learn we bought/built a farm. The surprise is even greater if they have ever known Lane – an associate dean and seasoned business faculty member at UT Knoxville – who had no prior experience with farming or large animals. But isn’t that the essence of adventure? Embarking on a journey that’s unpredictable and utterly exhilarating? Here are some of my reflections on our unexpected yet fulfilling path.
Waking Up to New Dreams
The best dreams aren’t those that let you sleep peacefully but those that jolt you awake, urging you to expand your horizons, amend or change course, and design your life through a new lens. This unfolding adventure has been just that for Lane. I’ve witnessed the transformation firsthand – his reconnection with himself, his newfound appreciation for our food supply, the tireless & stressful efforts of farmers, and the nurturing of animals. It’s about building a new thing & connecting with something primal and essential – the land, the people, the outdoors, the cycle of life.
A Gift of Unconditional Love
The unconditional love we’ve received from our community, farm animals and the land is a profound gift. It’s a connection that grounds us, reminds us of the simpler joys of life, and brings us closer. This bond has been a source of endless wonder and gratitude, expanding and enriching our lives in ways we never imagined.

This adventure has reshaped us both. We’re now committed to a shared journey, one that’s larger than ourselves, intertwined with our faith, passions, and the lessons we learn from others. It’s an ongoing exploration, a testament to the beauty of shared goals and aspirations.
Why a Career Academic Leapt into Farming
So why would someone like Lane, deeply entrenched in academia, dive headfirst into farming? Part of the answer certainly lies in his love for me. But, more importantly, it’s about what this journey brings out in him – a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and growth. This isn’t a change of profession; it’s an expansion and evolution of the soul.
In embracing this unexpected path, we’ve learned that life’s most extraordinary adventures often arise from the most surprising opportunities. And there’s nothing quite like pursuing these dreams with the one you love. It’s our own little slice of ‘bombdiggity’ – a daring leap into the unknown that has brought immeasurable gratitude, joy, and fulfillment.
