#FarmSunday Devotional: Acting on What You Hear

There’s something special about a good recipe. I love the way the ingredients come together—how a little salt here, a touch of sweetness there, and just the right amount of patience can transform simple things into something deeply satisfying. But as any good cook knows, having the recipe isn’t enough. You have to follow it. You have to act on it. Otherwise, it’s just words on a page.

Faith, like a good recipe, isn’t meant to stay on the page. And that’s exactly the point James drives home in today’s passage.

James 1:22–24 (The Message)

“Don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are a listener when you are anything but, letting the Word go in one ear and out the other. Act on what you hear! Those who hear and don’t act are like those who glance in the mirror, walk away, and two minutes later have no idea who they are, what they look like.”

Don’t fool yourself. Don’t be deceived or lulled into believing that you have it all together as a believer. James reminds us how easy it is to fall into the trap of being a passive Christian—hearing Scripture, but not really listening. Treating God’s Word as optional, like a side dish instead of the main course. When we do that, our spiritual lives lose flavor. We become empty, unsure of who we are in Christ.

To battle this kind of complacency, James calls us to action. “Act on what you hear.”

Make the Word your guiding compass. Immerse yourself in Scripture—don’t just read it, live it. Let God’s Word shape and mold you. Allow it to give real purpose and meaning to your life. Let it guide your choices, your relationships, your heart. When you become a doer of the Word, something beautiful happens: Scripture begins to transform you from the inside out.

You start to be more like Jesus.

You start to do the things Jesus would do.

And you start to look more like Him in the way you live, love, and serve others.

So this week, ask yourself:

Am I truly listening to—and acting on—the Word of God as the guiding pillar of my spiritual life?
